SERVICES

Not sure what edits you need? Check out my blog post explaining the steps of the editing process.

Copy Edit

An edit concerned with the spelling, grammar, consistency, and overall readability of your manuscript. This is one of the most important parts of the editorial process.

This edit should be done after the developmental edit is complete and you have received feedback from beta readers. You want your manuscript to be in its final form before submitting it for a copy edit.

I can provide a copy edit to the Australian Style Guide, the Chicago Manual of Style (which is the industry standard in the United States,) the UK Style Guide, and the New Zealand Style Guide. If you are not a native English speaker with your own dialect preference, I would recommend you select the Chicago Manual of Style as most English speakers are familiar with American English. Alternatively, you may wish to use the UK Style Guide as some consider this dialect to be the 'most correct.'

Includes:

  • An assessment of the spelling and grammar of your manuscript using the track changes feature in Microsoft Word so that you may see every change I have made to the document. This allows you to reject a change if a spelling or grammar violation was intentional and see your own weaknesses in this area. Google Docs has a comparable feature, so I can accept manuscripts in either format.

  • Notes on any issues with consistency throughout the manuscript. For example, if a character's eyes are described as brown and green at different points in the story.

Price: $8.00 USD per 1,000 words or $0.008 USD per word.

  • A 100,000 word novel would cost $800.00 USD, whereas a 25,000 novella would cost $200.00 USD.

  • Minimum manuscript length is 10,000. Manuscripts shorter than this will be charged at the minimum rate of $80.00 USD.

Developmental Edit

Also known as the structural edit or the content edit. As all its names suggest, a developmental edit is focused on the story content of your manuscript. It is sometimes described as a 'big picture' edit. This edit is concerned with the characterisation, plot, pacing, story structure, world building, and genre elements of the story.

Before this edit takes place, we will have a discussion either via voice chat, email or instant messaging about your intentions for this manuscript. I want to know about where you think/want the manuscript to sit regarding genre, your publishing goals, target audience, and overall vision for the project before I get started.

Includes:

  • An in-depth report on the issues and strengths of your manuscript with reference to the intended genre

  • Commentary throughout the manuscript using the track changes and comments features in Microsoft Word. This will allow you to see any changes made to the manuscript and decide whether you wish to keep them. It will also highlight the exact section comments were made in response to.

  • An initial pre-editing meeting, as mentioned above.

  • A second post-edit meeting to discuss my feedback in order for you to ask any questions you may have and suggest potential fixes to highlighted problems for a second opinion.

Price: $10.00 USD per 1,000 words or $0.01 USD per word.

  • A 100,000 word novel would cost $1000.00 USD, whereas a 25,000 novella would cost $250.00 USD.

  • Minimum manuscript length is 10,000. Manuscripts shorter than this will be charged at the minimum rate of $100.00 USD.

Proof Read

The final step before publication! The proof read should take place after all changes to the manuscript have been have been finalised.

This edit involves going through the manuscript with a fine-tooth comb to check for any errors missed in previous edits. This includes spelling, punctuation, grammar, formatting errors, and consistency errors. No commentary will be provided on the story itself, as the manuscript provided should be the final draft to be polished for publication.

Includes:

  • A marked-up copy of your manuscript with any final corrections to consistency and grammar and spelling edited using the track changes feature in Microsoft Word so that you can see and approve every change made to the document. This allows you to keep any intentional spelling violations that were not mentioned to me in the briefing, to see how much was missed in the copy edit, and to see your own weaknesses in this area.

Price: $5.00 USD per 1,000 words or $0.005 USD per word.

  • A 100,000 word novel would cost $500.00 USD, whereas a 25,000 novella would cost $125.00 USD.

  • Minimum manuscript length is 10,000. Manuscripts shorter than this will be charged at the minimum rate of $50.00 USD.

Beta Read

Feedback and commentary provided to an author by readers that falls within their target audience. Ideally, 3-5 beta readers should be engaged to provide this feedback.

Though being an editor does make me an ideal beta reader, it is still important when engaging beta readers to only work with people who read books similar to your manuscript. For that reason, I only provide beta reads for science fiction, fantasy, and LGBT fantasy romance in the young adult and adult age category.

Includes:

  • In-text commentary providing my reactions to the story as it unfolds.

  • Answers to up to 10 questions provided by you, the author.

  • 500 words on key strengths and weaknesses.

Price: $2.00 USD per 1,000 words or $0.002 USD per word.

  • A 100,000 word novel would cost $200.00 USD, whereas a 25,000 novella would cost $50.00 USD.

  • Minimum manuscript length is 10,000. Manuscripts shorter than this will be charged at the minimum rate of $50.00 USD.

Manuscript Critique

A critique of the story elements of an early draft of your manuscript undertaken before the developmental edit. This critique may be done in lieu of swapping manuscripts with another author, for those who do not have the time to give through and thoughtful feedback on someone else's work. It may also be

Authors seeking traditional publishing may desire a manuscript critique before querying their manuscript.

Sensitivity Read

An editorial option that may interest authors writing outside their lived experience who want the feedback of someone with that experience on how authentic their portrayal is. This edit is generally utilised by authors who are writing about or around a very sensitive topic and is not generally necessary in situations such as a man writing from a woman's point of view.

Please reach out if you are interested in this option, as I am an individual and can only provide feedback from my specific perspective. It's important to know what your area of concern is, as I may not be an appropriate person to provide this service.

'I received a beta review from C Moroney for my debut urban fantasy novella and was very happy with her feedback. She was able to give me both a high level, conceptual reaction to the work as a whole as well as detailed feedback on specific sections and wording. Some writers struggle as beta readers, as they can't help but suggest how they would have written the work. C Moroney was able to convey her reactions as a reader, exactly what I wanted, while providing a gentle suggestion of the direction the fix might lie in as an experienced writer. If you're considering hiring her, do it!'
